Background of the Study
Maternal mortality remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with disparities in maternal health outcomes across different states. Health policies play a crucial role in addressing maternal mortality by improving healthcare access, ensuring the availability of skilled birth attendants, and enhancing antenatal and postnatal care. In Nasarawa State, various health policies, including free maternal healthcare services, emergency obstetric care initiatives, and community-based interventions, have been introduced to reduce maternal mortality rates.
Despite these policies, maternal mortality remains high, raising concerns about the effectiveness of policy implementation. Socioeconomic factors, healthcare infrastructure, and policy awareness may influence maternal health outcomes. This study aims to examine how health policies have contributed to the reduction of maternal mortality in Nasarawa State and identify gaps in implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Maternal mortality persists in Nasarawa State despite the existence of policies aimed at improving maternal healthcare services. Challenges such as poor healthcare infrastructure, inadequate skilled personnel, and low policy awareness hinder the full realization of policy objectives. There is a need to critically examine the impact of existing health policies on maternal mortality reduction and determine areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of health policies in reducing maternal mortality in Nasarawa State.
To identify challenges affecting the implementation of maternal health policies.
To propose strategies for strengthening maternal health policy implementation.
